What Is Schema Markup? SEO Definition, Types & Implementation

Schema markup is structured data vocabulary — usually implemented as JSON-LD script blocks — that describes page content in a machine-readable format. It follows the schema.org standard, which Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex jointly support. Schema does not change what users see on the page; it gives search engines explicit labels for entities like products, recipes, events, FAQs, and organization details that might otherwise require inference from unstructured HTML.

Schema vs. Rankings

Google has stated that structured data is not a direct ranking factor. What it does enable is eligibility for rich results — enhanced SERP listings with star ratings, FAQ accordions, how-to steps, product prices, and breadcrumb trails. Rich results improve click-through rate, which indirectly affects traffic and engagement signals. Treat schema as a visibility and CTR tool, not a rankings hack.

Common Schema Types for SEO

Article / BlogPosting — identifies headline, author, date published. Useful for news and blog content. FAQPage — marks up question-and-answer pairs; can produce FAQ rich results when content meets Google's guidelines. Product — price, availability, review ratings for ecommerce. LocalBusiness — address, hours, geo coordinates for local SEO. HowTo — step-by-step instructions with optional images. Organization / WebSite — sitewide identity and sitelinks search box eligibility.

Implementation Basics

JSON-LD is Google's preferred format — a <script type="application/ld+json"> block in the <head> or body. Validate every implementation with Google's Rich Results Test before deploying. Mark up content that is visible on the page; invisible or misleading markup violates Google's structured data guidelines and can result in manual actions.

One page can contain multiple schema blocks or a single @graph array connecting related entities. Keep properties accurate and updated — stale product prices or outdated event dates in schema erode trust signals faster than having no schema at all.
